The SILCS diaphragm, marketed as Caya, is now available by prescription from healthcare providers in the United States. This exciting product launch expands the options for nonhormonal contraception, and is the first time in more than 50 years that a new diaphragm design has entered the US market.
Caya is a reusable, single-size diaphragm that is made of silicone and has a contoured spring to fit most women. It can be used for up to two years. Like other diaphragms, it is recommended for use with a contraceptive gel.
Caya was developed by PATH, CONRAD, and partners through a multi-year, user-centered process. Feedback from women, their partners, and health care providers from four countries resulted in user-defined features that make this diaphragm comfortable and easy to use. Caya is registered and in various stages of introduction in more than 20 countries.
HPSRx is the US distributor for the Caya diaphragm. They are a family-operated company located in Salem, Virginia.

PATH and its research partners are now working to assess opportunities for future introduction in developing countries, where diaphragms have not been available for decades. Introducing a nonhormonal barrier method could improve women's reproductive health options, especially for women who can't or don't want to use hormonal methods or an IUD, and whose partner will not use a male condom.
